EPDM Gaskets – Industrial users gain multiple benefits by using EPDM gaskets which are primarily used with weather seals and reduces noise in the automotive sector. EPDM gaskets have a black plate finish sheet with superior resistance to weathering, ozone and UV exposure. They can withstand weather changes and protect the transfer against cold, sunlight and wind. These gaskets also provide excellent chemical resistance*, and good electrical properties. EPDM gasket material resists animal and vegetable oils, steam, water and oxygenated solvents. This material meets ASTM D-2000-2BA specifications.

EPDM GASKET MATERIAL OVERVIEW

All too often people go directly to  gasket material when purchasing an elastomeric material for sealing a joint. Although  performs well in several applications, there are cases where using  works better. In instances of outdoor applications or situations where abrasive wear is likely, consider utilizing > gasket material.

EPDM is similar to Rubber in terms of its appearance and properties; therefore you can count on good compressibility and recovery being a distinctive feature of EPDM gasket material. Now before we get ahead of ourselves, it is important to remember that ALL gasket materials have strengths and weaknesses. Continue to read this page to ensure that EPDM is the correct choice for your application.

EPDM is short for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. The Ethylene and Propylene are hydrocarbons and gases at room temperature, yet they combine to make solid polymers like polyethylene and polypropylene. In the creation of EPDM, we adjust the proportions and control the polymerization process, which in turn creates long-term molecular chains with more rubbery properties.

EPDM is an extremely reliable material that can resist heat, oxidation, and the aging effects of ultraviolent light. The majority of other elastomers don’t have the flexibility that EPDM has at low temperatures, and pending its formulation, it can effectively operate within a -60°F to 300°F temperature range.

In addition to its great physical properties, this gasket has superb mechanical properties as well. Its tensile strength is in the range of 7 to 21 MPa. EPDM tensile strength is greater than alternative elastomers such as Silicone (5-10 MPa), Nitrile (12-15 MPa), and Neoprene (5-8 MPa). Also, unlike silicone, EPDM can confidently resist abrasive wear.

As for the chemical resistance of EPDM, this gasket material can tolerate exposure to acids and alkalies confidently, and is an excellent choice to use for both brake fluids and ketones. This gasket material is also great for situations where steam resistance is needed. However it should be noted that EPDM struggles with hydrocarbon oils and petroleum products as these may cause swelling.

RECOMMENDED EPDM GASKET APPLICATIONS:

EPDM is a fantastic general purpose rubber material. It is fairly immune to sunlight, water, and low temperatures which make it an excellent choice for gaskets outdoors and has good compression set resistance. This means that if using EPDM in an application where a joint may open up occasionally, the material will recover well and continue to seal with maximum proficiency. This gasket material also has high electrical resistance which makes it appropriate for some electrical applications.

Replace your silicone with EPDM! Silicone has a reputation in the gasket industry for being a high performer throughout a wide temperature range and with good flexibility. However, now that you’ve been educated on the ins & outs of EPDM you can make a smart, cost-effective choice by replacing silicone with EPDM in many applications. EPDM gasket material has a temperature range nearly just as wide and is a stronger, more durable material.

High grade material including Mil-specification is available. EPDM is also available in a white FDA approved sheet.
