Flexible Graphite Gaskets
Nothing seals better than gaskets made of graphite!
Graphite Gaskets Seal High Temperatures
Flexible Graphite Gaskets – Once considered as a specialty gasket material for extreme temperature and chemical services, Flexible Graphite Sheet Gasketmaterial can now be found in more typical applications. Flexible graphite has emerged as an affordable option for the majority of applications due to today’s economies of scale and increased competition. The primary reason for an increased demand in flexible graphite is due to its ability to replace a wide range of gasket materials. This increases safety and simplicity when selecting the correct material for the job. What was once an expensive and complicated decision for choosing gasket materials, is now an easy and affordable choice thanks to flexible graphite. The graphite sheets are available with an anti-stick coating that avoids sticking, aides in easy gasket removal, and keeps the flanges cleaner. The anti-stick properties are independent of temperature and stress, and the cost of the coating is insignificant when compared to the cost of cleaning the flanges.
FLEXIBLE GRAPHITE GASKET COMMON APPLICATIONS
High Temp applications – Flexible Graphite seals in applications to 850°F with absolute confidence. Flexible graphite may still be applicable when conditions exceed 850°F.
This is possible for two reasons:
1) An oxidation inhibitor is present in some grades of flexible graphite, this provides capability of sealing up to 900°F.
2) The combination of heat and oxygen are the first thing to attack flexible graphite, not heat itself.
Flexible graphite can withstand up to 5,400°F as long as oxygen is not present. At 850°F and above it’s a sliding scale. In applications with steam or any other reduced oxygen atmosphere flexible graphite will handle 1200°F. If you have any questions or doubts about your application please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Flexible Graphite can now seal chemical applications previously only sealed by Kalrez, Viton, Chemrez, PTFE, or Gylon. However, the ability for flexible graphite to seal these chemicals is dependent upon the amount of pressure applied. Sulfuric acid and Nucleic acids are used to produce flexible graphite, therefore reintroducing it to those chemicals can also break it down.
Steam Applications? Flexible Graphite will seal it!
Note: When using flexible graphite on stem flanges, be aware that while the steam is sealed, due to flexible graphite’s conductivity characteristics it can appear to “sweat” (but not leak) in humid areas.
Oil and Gas was once always sealed with non-asbestos gasket materials. While non-asbestos does a good job, flexible graphite gasket material does a better job! EQMD, Air quality leakage rates control is met every day by refineries around the world using flexible graphite. Like most materials, it is possible to replace non-asbestos with flexible graphite in the interest of standardizing on one material.
FLEXIBLE GRAPHITE NOT RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS:
Do not use flexible graphite sheet gasket material for Food, FDA, NSF, or any application where graphite contamination could be an issue. Flexible graphite will particle transfer. It’s carbon, so it will act like a lead pencil.

Flexible graphite laminate reinforced with a tanged stainless steel core. The properties of this material replicate those of FlexiGraf FGS1, however the FGS3 can tolerate slightly more pressure.
Flexible graphite laminate reinforced with a flat stainless steel core. The properties of this material also replicate those of FlexiGraf FGS1.
Flexible graphite laminate reinforced with a pure alluminum alloy core. The properties of this material are similar to the FGS1,2, and 4. The main difference is the amount pressure this product can tolerate. The FGS1200 can withstand a maximum operating pressure of 1450 PSI.
FLEXIGRAF MULTIFLEX HTP
Flexible graphite laminate reinforced with a tanged stainless steel multilayers core. The properties of this material replicate those of the FlexiGraf family. The MultiFlex HTP has a higher maximum operating pressure, withstanding pressure up to 4350 PSI.
Flexible graphite laminate reinforced with a flat stainless steel multilayers core. This material has identical properties of the MultiFlex HTP. The only differences are the color of the material and its flat stainless steel.
FLEXIGRAF UNIGRAPH 500
This material is composed of flexible graphite based with polymer coating on both sides. The material can withstand a minimum temperature of -328°F and a maximum temperature of 842°F. The UNIGRAPH 500 can tolerate a maximum operating pressure of 1450 PSI. Creep relaxation is less than or equal to 8%. Compressibility is 40-50%. Recovery is 3-7%.
FLEXIGRAF UNIGRAPH 500 HD
This product is identical to the UNIGRAPH 500. The only differences are its density: 1,3 – 1,5 (g/cm³) and its compressibility: 25-35%.
This material is composed of flexible graphite based wire mesh reinforced with polymer coating on both sides. The UNIMETAL can withstand a minimum temperature of -328°F and a maximum temperature of 842°F. The material can tolerate a maximum operating pressure at 2175 PSI. Creep relaxation is less than or equal to 8%. Compressibility is between 40-50%. Recovery is between 3-7%.
