Flexible Graphite Gaskets
Nothing seals better than gaskets made of graphite!
Graphite Gaskets Seal High Temperatures
Flexible Graphite Gaskets –
Once considered as a specialty gasket material for extreme temperature and chemical services, Flexible Graphite gaskets can now be found in more common applications. Flexible graphite has become a far more affordable gasket material. The drop in cost is attributable to today’s economies of scale and increased competition.
Reduced costs and increased leakage regulations are the primary reasons for increased demand in flexible graphite. Graphite gaskets increase the simplicity of selecting the correct gasket for the job. Due to flexible graphites wide range of temperature and chemical compatibility it is ideal for the majority of industrial applications.
What was once an expensive and complicated decision for choosing gasket materials, is now an easy and affordable choice thanks to flexible graphite.
What are common FLEXIBLE GRAPHITE GASKET applications?
Flexible Graphite gaskets can be used in most applications. Graphite is exceptional for High Temp applications, or applications that must be sealed well. – Flexible Graphite seals in applications to 850°F with absolute confidence. Flexible graphite may still be applicable up to 5,400 F if no oxygen is present. If you have an application that exceeds 950 F and has oxygen present, consider Mica Gaskets (up to 1800 F)
This is possible for two reasons:
1) An oxidation inhibitor is present in some grades of flexible graphite, this provides the capability of sealing up to 950°F.
2) The combination of heat and oxygen are the first thing to attack flexible graphite, not heat itself.
At 850°F and above the temperature resistance is a sliding scale. In applications with steam or any other reduced oxygen atmosphere flexible graphite will handle 1200°F. The less oxygen, the higher the temperature resistance. If you have any questions or doubts about your application please contact us at support@aspseal.com.
Flexible Graphite gaskets can seal chemical applications previously only sealed by Kalrez, Viton, Chemrez, PTFE, or Gylon. However, the ability for flexible graphite to seal these chemicals is dependent upon the amount of pressure applied. Sulfuric acid and Nucleic acids are used to produce flexible graphite, therefore reintroducing it to those chemicals can also break it down.
Steam Applications? Flexible Graphite will seal it! Note: When using flexible graphite on stem flanges, be aware that while the steam is sealed, due to flexible graphite’s conductivity characteristics it can appear to “sweat” (but not leak) in humid areas.
Oil and Gas was once always sealed with non-asbestos gasket materials. While non-asbestos does a good job, flexible graphite gasket material does a better job! EQMD, Air quality leakage rates control is met every day by refineries around the world using flexible graphite. Like most materials, it is possible to replace non-asbestos with flexible graphite in the interest of standardizing on one material.
