During this period of time, society was introduced to the automobile industry, which created an increased use of oils in industrial machinery, automotive, and military applications. Prior to the development of nitrile sheet rubber, manufacturers had to suffice with natural rubber which had an inconsistent supply and performance. As industrialization of the western hemisphere amplified, the effort to develop an optimal oil-resistant rubber became critical.
WORLD WAR I CHANGED EVERYTHING
The introduction and improvements of jeeps, tanks, and planes exposed how mechanized warfare had become. Britain was the leader in the world’s natural rubber supply. In an effort to disable its main enemy, Britain cut Germany off its supply. The insufficient rubber supply restricted Germany’s ability to operate and maintain its war machinery as well as they would’ve liked. Although natural rubber does not resist oils and greases as well as nitrile rubber, it was the only appropriate material available to use during this time.
Post World War I, Germany understood it was an absolute necessity to create its own rubber supply. They remained cut off from the world’s supply ever after the war had concluded. During the time period between World War’s I & II, German chemists pushed to create an elastomer that could be utilized in automotive applications without incurring degradation from oils and greases. The Germans desired to develop something that would outperform natural rubber which decomposed synthetic elastomers. After countless prototypes and formulations, Germany chemists developed an oil-resistant rubber called Nitrile Butadiene Rubber, or Buna-N Rubber. This new rubber was instantly successful and continues to satisfy the needs we face today.
Nitrile Rubber is highly demanded by OEM’s because it has outstanding oil-resisting capabilities. It is common to find nitrile rubber in automotive applications such as garage workshops, because of its ability to resist oils that are synthetic and organic in nature. This material is effective in this industry because drops of motor oil can remain on a nitrile rubber surface for long durations of time without degrading the material.
