The suitability of using metal is highly dependent on the application and the condition of the flanges. Metal has no recovery and has limited ability to conform to irregular surfaces. Metal gaskets are common in flanges that are designed with a groove to contain them as in RTJ gaskets. Metal is also used to encase non-asbestos gaskets, which will provide some recovery (jacketed gaskets).
Corrugated and Kammprofile gaskets use metal as the core with sealing material on the outer surface (Usually flexible graphite).
What metel gakset materials are used in the construction of a spiral wound gasket?
The selection of metallurgy certainly is a product of the application the gasket is to be placed into. Not only does temperature have to be considered, but so does the product being sealed. Caustics, acids and abrasive materials require special metallurgies to maintain the designed function of the gasket.
Other metals can be specified to meet the demands of your application.
1. Available metals include 321 SS, 347 SS, Alloy 20, Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel, Nickel, and Titanium.
2. Other filler materials include PTFE, Ceramic, and Mica Graphite.
3. When not made of Carbon Steel, the usual call-out is the same as the metallurgy of the winding.
4. The inner ring may be made from a non-metallic material such as PTFE to provide chemical protection to the gasket, however, PTFE will not provide protection against inward buckling.
