Non-Asbestos gaskets serve a wide range of industrial applications.
Non-Asbestos Gaskets – The removal of asbestos from the manufacturing material makes these sheets ideal for steam, oil and water sealing. We cut Non-Asbestos Gaskets from all the major manufacturers materials including, Durlon, Klinger, Armstrong, Tedit, FMI, Johns Manville, Dx Seal, Sepco, Utex, etc.
Non-Asbestos Material
Just as Asbestos came in multiple grades, and was combined with different rubber compounds, the same is true with non-asbestos materials. Each fiber serves as a reinforcement against pressure. Non-asbestos gaskets contain one of multiple asbestos replacements. Common non-asbestos fibers include, Aramid, Kevlar, Fiberglass, and mineral fiber. Each fiber and elastomer combination performs differently resulting in the need for multiple non-asbestos gasket styles.
Kevlar (an aramid fiber) is known for being approximately 2 to 9 times more durable than asbestos. These fibers then create a unique blend with different polymers to meet the needs of varieties of applications.
NON-ASBESTOS MATERIALS ARE OFTEN USED IN THE FOLLOWING APPLICATIONS:
Oil & Gas Production, Automotive, Chemical Processing, Mining, Petrochemical, Refining, Pulp and Paper, Power generation, and may more.
Today’s major manufacturers include: Garlock, Gasket Resources Inc. (Durlon), and Thermoseal (previously Klinger USA). The majority of manufacturers are now producing off shore. Garlock produces sheet in Mexico and the USA for North American consumption. Gasket Resources Inc. produces in North America, Thermoseal produces domestically in Ohio (USA) and Internationally. Sourcing of course is a dynamic situation and subject to change.
No matter who the manufacturer is, the basics are the filler and the elastomer used. There are no two compounds (or the % of filler) that are identical, having said that, the basic elastomers are: NBR (Buna-N), SBR, EPDM, or Neoprene. If you examine which material you need (as specified by the application) and choose the non-asbestos gasket material with that elastomer you will have good results. Through the use of this method, you are now able to choose a competitive brand that will assist your application.
In general, the typical “Binders” are: NBR, SBR, Neoprene, and EPDM.
To simplify things, each material listed will indicate the “binder”, despite who the manufacturer is. This provides ease when cross-referencing equivalent materials. It is important to also pay attention to Tensile Strength (for pressure resistance), Temperature Ratings, and Compression/Recovery Ratings.
For optimal performance, also consider Size, temperature, application, media, pressure, speed (if dynamic) of your specific application.
For finished gaskets consider Bolt loads, the size of bolts, the number of bolts, the bolt material and available torque.
Each manufacture we represent has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. Durlon is our preferred brand based on the quality, consistency and availability. Below you will find a listing of the sheet materials we can cut gaskets for you from.
