Neoprene rubber gaskets have copious amounts of properties, all of which make it a very useful material. The capabilities of neoprene has made it one of the most common rubber gaskets to use. Neoprene is a trade name of DuPont, developed in the 1930’s by DuPont scientists of the DuPont laboratories. This synthetic rubber was developed as a general purpose compound.


Neoprene is elastic, water proof, and moderately resistant to chemicals. Neoprene has been called the “best and final” of synthetic rubbers because of the wide range of benefits it offers. Neoprene rubber can be found in things such as wetsuits, all the way to laboratory equipment protectors. Neoprene gasket materials have the ability to withstand harsh environments and can be purchased at a cost that won’t break the bank, making it a favorite for gasket materials. It should be noted that gaskets are not solely created from rubber, but some from metal as well.

Metal is a very durable material in applications with tremendous temperature, however a major disadvantage to metal gaskets is they are ineffective for most mediums. The hardness of metal restricts these gaskets to being used only with materials harder than metal, otherwise the gaskets will fail to compress sufficiently enough to create an air tight seal.

Neoprene is not dense and weights approximately 1 1/4 lbs. per 1/8″ in a standard durometer of 60. Style 0734 – 70 Duro Cloth Finish – Excellent resistance to sunlight, and outdoor weathering. This style gasket material is a strong performer when applications require contact with many oils and chemicals. This material has a cloth finish.
